How Will Lifting My Truck or Jeep Affect My Ride?

March 25, 2022

You've probably seen those huge monster trucks on TV which lay waste to everything they come across, and the aggressive look more than appeals to you. Most people who lift their trucks or jeeps do it for the aesthetics, but others do it to get more ground clearance.

Depending on your truck and jeep and the lift kit you go with, undertaking such a modification can alter how you feel while driving. Before we dive into the specifics of how lifting your truck or jeep will be affected, let's understand how you should choose your lift kit.

The Facts

Selecting the right lift kit for your truck or jeep is the first step to getting the modifications you want. However, no single kit fits all trucks, so finding a lift is crucial. The first thing you need to do is to set up your budget.

Secondly, consider what you use the vehicle for and the size of tires you'd like. Next, look into the factory suspension specifications for the car, as it will help you establish whether you need a suspension or body lift.

A body lift uses spacers to lift the car's body 3 inches higher without altering the suspension. Body lifts are a great option to modify your vehicle's look to allow for bigger wheels at an affordable price. However, a body lift may not be the best option if you're planning to go off-roading since it affects your truck's stability.

A suspension lift is better suited for serious off-roading. It involves replacing the shocks, lift springs, trailing arms, driveshaft, steering components, and control arms. It allows more suspension ground clearance, enables you to get even larger tires, and enhances off-road capability.

How Will Lifting My Vehicle Affect My Ride

Lifting your vehicle increases its center of gravity and makes it more stable. Vehicles with higher and broader tires usually have excellent stability. Still, it's always advisable to take the time to understand the modifications and their limitations.

Ride and Suspension

Using a body lift kit won't affect your suspension or ride since it only involves the vehicle's frame. You will gain a few inches off the ground, but your car won't be harmed. Generic suspension tuning can result in loss of suspension damping, leading to serious issues.

To maintain a smooth suspension and ride, go for reservoir shocks, custom leaf springs, coilover shocks, or traction bars. Although they may be expensive, they will tame your vehicle's suspension and significantly improve your ride.

Increasing the size of your tire means sacrificing your engine power. The bigger your tire is, the greater the cruising power. Ensure your truck is regeared correctly if you want to avoid this. Simple math will tell you the gear ratio that would get you back to your stock equivalent. The gear ratio is derived from the new diameter, the old diameter, and the old axle ratio to form your new axle ratio.

Slow reaction, wandering, and bump steer are all things that can happen once you lift your truck. This happens for one of two reasons. Either the wheels have overburdened your steering system, or there is improper steering geometry.

Adding a hydraulic ram can help enhance any steering issues you face. It's worth noting that lifting your truck deprives you of the ability to emergency stop like before. The best way to control such problems is to alter how you drive to fit your new lift.

The choice to lift your vehicle or not boils down to its use. Avid off-roaders benefit significantly from lifting their trucks. However, if your vehicle is for family use, you're better off without the lift. Always check underneath the car constantly for wear and tear and maintain safety.
